Kristina Vogel becomes Ambassador
Berlin. Kristina Vogel, who has been paralyzed since an accident, will support the World Cycling Championship 2020 in the Berlin Velodrome as an ambassador. This was reported by the Organizing Committee. "It's great that I can involved myself as an ambassador in the preparation of Track Worlds 2020. I'm sure Berlin will do anything to make the title fights a great success and that cycling in Germany will benefit sustainable from a long term”, Vogel said.
The next title fights, which also conclude the qualification for the Olympic Games 2020 in Tokyo, take place from 26. February to 1. March 2020 in the Velodrome on Landsberger Allee. "Kristina Vogel has created unforgettable hours with her carefree nature and her successes. She has bravely and exemplary mastered her accident and even expanded her role model effect." I`m sure, with her presence and appearance at the Track World Championships in Berlin, she will create goose bumps again”, said Rudolf Scharping, President of the German Cycling Federation (BDR).
Vogel had a trainings accident in Cottbus at the end of June 2018, since than she is paralyzed from seventh thoracic vertebra. As a two-time Olympic champion and eleven times World Champion, the Erfurt based is the most successful track cyclist of all time. At the 2017 European Championships in the Velodrome she could win twice gold. At the Track Cycling World Cup at the Landsberger Allee in the beginning of December, the 28-year-old had one of her first public appearances after the accident and thus showed her great attachment to the sport.
The World Championships 2020 take place after 1999 for the second time in the sports metropolis Berlin. The Track World Championships will be the completion of a high-level competition serie which has started in 2017 with the European Championships. "World-class sports and strong emotions - that's what the Track Worlds 2020 in the Berlin Velodrome stands for - The same as Kristina Vogel has stand for as an active athlete and even after her accident. We couldn´t have wish no one better and we are delighted about her commitment ”, said Scharping.
